Project Based Learning

Yesterday was day 1 of our Spring PBL. "Give Me Shelter" is our project focus for the next two weeks. My 3rd grade students are are designing and creating a new room for a homeless shelter. Our entry event was a visit from a local high school student who is considered "homeless." She taught my students the importance of not judging someone just because they are homeless. Homeless people can be happy too. She is a full time student and has an after school job. She is proof that you are in control of your own life, and can make great changes if you try.

My students were put into groups of 3-4 and given a black cardboard box. They are in charge of carpeting, painting, and creating furniture for the room. Pictures are below from day 1.

Helping Hands

We, Kind, Compassionate Kids, have been so busy this week with our project. Yesterday we brainstormed fundraising plans to raise money to help a family. See our ideas below.

Today we had a visitor from Helping Hands that taught us about the organization and how they help the community! We learned so much from Mrs. Hamm!

PBL Day 2

I asked my students to bring 3 things they would want to save in a house fire. See what they brought below...

We had some snake skins (representing snakes that couldn't make it to school), lots of photos, cherished stuffed animals, favorite earrings, and baby blankets. It was exciting and rewarding to see the memories and personal items that my students cherish.

Fireman visit

Ms. Seymore's third grade class enjoyed a visit from Mr. Peralez, a fireman from the Josephine Fire Department. He introduced the inquiry based learning project they will be working on for 6 weeks. The project topic is "How can we raise money and involve the community to provide aid for a family at Rochell who has lost their home and belongings due to a disaster?" Ms. Seymore's class will research fundraising plans, develop a budget, create a care package, and learn to serve others along the way.

Shaving Cream Landforms

We are learning about landforms in Social Studies. We used shaving cream today to represent our landforms!
